Celebrating Students & End of Year Awards

Dear Stowe Middle School Families,

The Stowe Middle School Leadership Team made a priority to review our End of the Year Awards Ceremony.

Historically, Stowe Middle School has held an Awards Ceremony in June. The Awards Ceremony recognizes a variety of efforts: academic, citizenship, kindness, improvements, etc. In interviews with students and adults, we found that a large number of audience members, award recipients, and award presenters find this system to lack equity. This prompted us to explore other ways to recognize students.

Stowe Middle School intends to honor all students and their unique skills, interests and successes. Additionally, we are committed to making our school welcoming to all students and finding a more inclusive and diverse way to recognize students.

As a result of Stowe Middle School’s intention to honor all students and their unique skills, interests and successes, we will be transitioning from our traditional Awards Ceremony to a more equitable process by doing the following:

  • This Thursday, TAs will celebrate all students by recognizing their successes in a classroom setting.

  • In 2019-2020, Stowe Middle School will embed recognition opportunities for student led recognition of peers.

  • In 2019-2020, Stowe Middle School will embed sharing opportunities where students will be asked to identify their own successes.

Please note that this shift will not impact the award presentation during 8th Grade Graduation on June 13, 2019.

The Stowe Middle School Leadership Team welcomes your feedback on this transition.

The Stowe Middle School Leadership Team consist of:

Gerlisa Garrett, Sixth Grade Teacher

Jeff Grogan, Seventh Grade Teacher

Ian Shea, Eighth Grade Teacher

Andy Gagnon, Music Teacher

Heidi Vietze, Spanish Teacher

Seth Marineau, French Teacher

Dan Morrison, Principal
