TECHNOLOGY / APP HEADS UP:
I wanted to make you aware of an app called TikTok. Many children across the country, as young as second grade all the way through high school age, are using the TikTok App. TikTok was formerly known as Music.ly. This app is used to share short user generated music videos with other users. The app is popular with youth because of the fun filters, access to popular music, and the ability to be creative with lip syncing. Taking videos of students on campus could be in violation of our technology user agreement and/or privacy rules. Please review this expectation with your student(s).
The attached slideshow (courtesy of Barre Town School) will explain the features of TikTok. You will learn how students view/create content in the app, and the very important privacy settings that all users should consider. There is a slide that contains explicit videos that you may not want to watch with your student around. These videos were included to show you what is easily accessible to all users of the TikTok app.
Stowe Middle School’s cell phone procedures indicate students should not be on their cell phones during the learning day. The exception is for the last five minutes of the day. If a student is seen using a phone on campus during the learning day the student runs the risk of the phone being held in the office for parent pickup.
Please review your child’s phone and have a dialogue with your student.
SMHS Guidance Department Email
An email was sent out on Friday January 31, 2020 concerning the 8th grader’s course registration for freshman year. This email was sent to all MS parents in error. It should have only gone out to parents of 8th graders only. We apologize for the confusion.

In follow up from the Paul Foxman community evening in which he explored anxiety in youth, the Stowe Middle High School School Counseling Team is hosting a book group. The book we will be reading is Dancing with Fear by Paul Foxman to continue the conversation. The book group will meet on March 10th from 8:30-9:30am at Stowe Middle High School. Please RSVP by completing our google form March 5th. Please check out the book at your local library or purchase your own copy.
Students need permission to stay at the mountain at the end of Friday Program each week. One form will give permission for the full season. The school will not be responsible for any students staying at the mountain after 2:45pm. Parents will be responsible for arranging transportation home for students not taking the bus back to school. Your child may still ride the bus back on a Friday Program day if you want or need them to do so.
This is the permission form.
Students have outdoor recess when the temperature is 25 degrees or higher. We encourage students to wear a coat, hat, and gloves to stay warm. If you are in need of winter clothing, please email Lauren Conti (SMS Counselor, [email protected]).
