Stowe High School Update - March 20, 2020

Dear Students and Families,

Thank you for your patience and support as we embark on a new phase of teaching and learning.  This will be challenging, overwhelming, and a new adventure for all of us. Teachers have been working diligently to be prepared for our start on Monday, March 23rd to keep the learning, relationships, and support continuing during this time when we are unable to be physically together.  The purpose of this letter is to provide you important information related to remote teaching and learning for the Stowe High School community.  This letter includes a daily schedule as well as helpful resources.

The daily schedule, shown below, will guide you and your student through each day.  The goal is to make the learning accessible and achievable for all students. As you and your student(s) review this schedule please remember that this schedule is meant to provide a guide to how a student should structure their days.  Each teacher will be communicating regularly via Schoology and email. Therefore, it is important that students check their school email and Schoology daily.  Additionally, all advisors will be connecting with their advisory students on a daily basis. Teachers will use a variety of methods such as, but not limited to, Google Meet, school email, and phone calls.  The purpose of a daily advisory check-in is to provide each student an opportunity to connect with an adult from the school, share how their remote learning is going, and help answer any questions or provide new school information.

During each school day students will focus on a maximum of four classes.  The structure will provide students an opportunity to have flexibility in their days and to also help them with focus and learning progression.  Class time for students will look differently from class to class and from day to day. A class could be meeting with the entire class and teacher via Google Meet to watch a live lesson and ask questions in real time, or students may watch a recorded lesson and work on a specific assignment, project, or short assessment.  During periods when a student does not have a class, students should prepare themselves for the next day’s classes and/or work on practicing skills and learning various content. Teachers will also have office hours each day and extended hours on Friday. Office hours may also look different from teacher to teacher. Students should check school email and Schoology to know when they can check in with each of their teachers on a daily basis.

The work that we are doing during this closure matters. Our remote learning process counts as school days and a student’s effort will help lead them toward proficiency and graduation. I encourage families to have an understanding of your student(s) remote learning schedule while also letting students be in charge of their learning.  Families should do daily check-in’s to know how the learning is going and if your student(s) is struggling or challenged as well as what is working. Support, flexibility, and patience will be needed as we all try to navigate school and learning in a different manner.

  • Social Distancing: The Vermont Department of Health recommends keeping 6 feet or more of separation from others and avoiding places where you may come in close contact with others.  Although temping, please avoid gathering together at other people’s homes, hosting parties, creating in-person study groups, going to possibly crowded areas such as gyms, movie theatres, etc.  Do continue physical activities that make it easier to keep a good distance from others such as biking or hiking. Student athletes that are looking to stay in shape and remain active should develop a daily exercise plan that they can do on their own.

Thank you again for all your support.  This is definitely a team effort.
